Exploring the Subject Through Multiple Intelligences
In his work on accelerated learning techniques, Rose builds on Howard Gardner’s multiple intelligences theory and suggests how students can engage all seven intelligences, using many of the techniques described above, as they explore a new subject (Rose, 1992:59-66):
- Mathematical-Logical Intelligence
Make a flow chart or diagram that expresses what you are learning in a step-by-step manner.
- Linguistic Intelligence
Form questions, find the answers, and cite them out loud.
- Intrapersonal Intelligence
Compare what is new with what is familiar.
- Visual/Spatial Intelligence
- Bodily/Physical Intelligence
Write it down. Make note cards.
- Interpersonal Intelligence
Teach what you are learning to someone else or compare notes with someone else taking the course.
- Musical Intelligence
Play appropriate background music as you think about the topic. Try to choose music that represents what you are learning. Quiet classical music has proven to stimulate the emotional center of the brain.
